What Should Work-Life Balance Look Like as a Catholic Founder?
As an entrepreneur, work-life balance is likely not something in your vocabulary. However, as a Catholic, it needs to be something you have at least some consideration for.
Allow me to lay out a few items to consider regarding leisure time and rest (as I write this on a holiday).
Our Universal Vocation
Before our vocation and secondary vocation comes the universal calling — the calling to strive for heaven. We cannot possibly strive for heaven without time and effort. The goal is total unity with God even during our work actions. But to get to that point requires learning and practice. So if you’re not making time for God, in prayer, mass, or silence, you’re neglecting your first calling.
This is a form of pride because you’re refusing to acknowledge the fact that you are a creature and by your nature depend on the Creator.
Work Is Our Second Vocation
After the universal vocation comes our primary vocation. For most of us, that is to marriage. If we neglect our role as spouse and parent in pursuit of our secondary vocation, work, our lives become disordered.
Again, it’s not possible to fulfill the call to our primary vocation solely through providing financially. We must be present, we must make time for our family.
Insufficient Rest Leads to Shoddy Work
Whether you’re a solopreneur who has clients to deliver to or you run a big org with many employees, you need to be present to do good work. Lack of rest will prevent you from delivering well or managing well.
No Rest Means No Learning
In business, there are constant changes and challenges to face. We need to stay sharp and educated on these changes so we can adapt. Whether that’s AI, a competitor entering the market, or just new techniques in your field. If you are not setting aside time for education of yourself and your employees, you’re neglecting a key part of your business.
It’s Literally a Commandment
The 3rd Commandment: Remember to Keep Holy The Sabbath. If God Himself rested, we must as well.
Some Problems Require Space
Certain business problems can only be recognized with distance. And some known problems require space to think through properly.
Constant Work Demonstrates Lack of Trust
You may often feel that you “can’t” step away. There are too many things going on and if you walk away, even for a little, things will crumble.
This ignores the fact that you have God in heaven watching over you. If you don’t trust God enough to help you in this way, you have bigger issues than a business that is fully dependent on your presence.
Please really consider this. All of us are in the care of God. That includes our business endeavors. Worrying so much that we refuse to take a break from work, is a failure to recognize God’s goodness and providence in our lives.
Finally, if Pope St. John Paul II, the leader of a billion Catholics, made sure to take rest on a regular basis, you and I can (and should) too.
God Bless & Happy Building

Heavenly Hustlers
Looking to meet other ambitious Catholic business owners? You’re in the right place.
Meet today’s Heavenly Hustlers.
✝️ St. Benedict, founder of the Benedictines is someone we can look up to as a founder. The order was established in 529 and is still active with approximately 7,500 monks and ~15,000 nuns worldwide today.
While I have not studied St. Benedict extensively, I would say we can be certain that part of the reason they are still around is it was built to last. This was not built with a 3-5 year ‘exit’ horizon in mind.
On top of that, we should notice the purpose. This organization was built with purpose. Not just some thing to do because he was bored.
Are you building your business to last?🍂 Stephen Mahner (yes my brother) has officially launched Mr Pig’s Lawn Care and landed his first clients from door knocking today.
🤝 Kyle Neilson is the founder of Teem Work Consulting, helping mission-driven leaders build effective teams. (He’s also hosting an event in NYC in October)
🧱 Dominic Gruetzmacher runs a biz buying, holding, and selling LEGO sets (or at least he did — I worked for him when I was like 10 — best job ever!)
📺 Miriam Westen is the founder of CatholicNewsWorld.com
👕 Steve Magyar runs TheSurfFishingGuy.com — an apparel brand.
